Growth Mindset

Growth is not linear, neither is progress. I cannot start something today, and only see positive results moving forward, and so many people are stuck under that expectation that they will always get a positive result. That is so far from true, growth is not a once track path to the top, but filled with many ups and downs along the way. By the time success is reached, the path to get there will look more like a roller coaster than a staircase. So many people get discouraged and feel like failures when in reality, they do not understand that growth is not linear, and will not happen from simply trying one time. There are ups and downs to reaching success, and I, like many others have experienced them in my life and the endeavors that I choose. I want to share a brief story about a time when I didn’t have a growth mindset, and that was during my senior year of high school. I was taking an advanced class, Calculus I and II, it was an experience to say the least. We were talking about some concepts and I for the life of me could not understand. I was so frustrated and I wanted to give up. When the time for the test came, I nearly failed, getting a 72%. I was at risk of losing my eligibility, and that meant no activities. Something needed to be done, luckily, our instructor was understanding allowed retakes, it the student put work in with tutoring and make up work. I worked so hard and tried to learn all the concepts, and when I retook the test I got an 89%. While that still wasn’t a perfect score, it was a lot higher than the first time, the effort I put in was worth it. From that point on, when I felt discouraged, I didn’t give up, I tried again, with the growth mindset and I started to see successes. When I was open to the idea that things might not always go my way, I was more encouraged to keep trying, especially when I didn’t want to.
I think that this is a valuable lesson for anyone, growth mindset is the difference between failure and progress towards success. Where in your life could you alter your mindset slightly to make the outlook slightly more positive? If there is one thing that is important to think about, it is this: growth is not linear, one cannot simply walk up the stairs to success, but rather growth is like a roller coaster, with many ups and downs and even a few turnarounds before the end goal is reached. While it is important to know that growth takes time there is still a sufficient amount of effort needed to be put in for those results to be seen. Just because you understand that it will take time, does not mean that you cannot put in the necessary effort to make it happen. Progress will come, do not be discouraged by a time frame or setbacks.

You're Not Alone in Failure

Failure is Fundamental

Failure is fundamental to our success. While it may seem counterintuitive, it is very much true. There are so many things that I would not have ever become successful in had I not first failed, one of those is studying. I have found school to be pretty easy, and minimal studying got me by more times than I could count. However, this minimal studying didn’t work in more challenging classes, and my first test score really made that evident. While I did not fail the test entirely, my score was significantly lower than any of my past class averages on tests. I knew something needed to change because that minimal study time was not going to fly for the rest of the year. I had to learn new study habits. Building new habits took a lot of time, more than I want to admit, but after some time, I finally was able to study properly and my test scores increased as well. Some of the habits that I had to change were how I used my time studying, and I had to start spreading it out over a few days whic...
